Jackpot – movie review

Jackpot: Trust, Greed, Sex, Money, Poker, River

Jackpot, directed by Kaizad Gustad is a fast paced thriller con set in Goa with crazy characters, against the backdrop of casino boats.

The crazy ones are Naseeruddin Shah as Boss – The Casino Owner, Sunny Leone as Maya, Sachiin J Joshi as Francis and then there is the craziest guy Makrand Deshpande.

With its sharp comic one-liners, the film Jackpot goes back and forth in time, capturing one Goan monsoon of Full Jhol. It’s a card game between the players in the con. Who will come out Aces and who will end up being the Joker?

The Casino owner holds a Poker Tournament and the prize money for it is 5 crores. The real game starts after the jackpot money goes missing and all three of them – Boss, Maya and Francis are after the amount.

Jackpot begins with a title track that seems to be “inspired” by the opening number of a Bond film.

Then onward, the crazy characters are introduced, and to make it confusing, there are multiple subplots adding to the mystery.

An amateur gang of young Goans plan the perfect con – no nuksaan, no pareshan. However, all good plans often have hiccups, and even fail…

It doesn’t take long for them to discover that a reverse con has been played back on them – by the very people they were trying to con.

In doing so, the five members of the gang split and start suspecting each other. After all, when there is cash in a briefcase, and a beautiful woman with a gun, things tend to go horribly wrong.

The world of the lazy Goa backwaters is pitted against the world of the non-stop Goa casinos, where night can be day.

This is an ideal breeding ground, where all kind of cons can find a suitable home. This is Jackpot -The Casino. The largest ship in the harbour. And we’re open 24×7.

Positive factors in this film are its short duration, its background score, the skilful editing, and its sharp narrative. Naseeruddin Shah is wasted in this comical role. Porn star Sunny Leone attempts to act. Poor thing has tried her level best in giving the best performance in her acting skills. She does look pretty throughout and is the scene stealer.

Sachiin in his second movie still struggles to act. He has mastered the art of appearing crazy looking, and is a bit better than his first film.

It is Makrand Deshpande who does a significant role of playing the laidback cop, and he is actually convincing as a typical Goan chap.

Con artists are most welcome to try…

Those who enjoy Bond type thrillers, may hit a JACKPOT watching this film, others may refrain spending their ticket prices and save their time and money to watch the blockbuster Dhoom 3 which arrives this Friday.
